Upgrading Red Hat with November 2007 updates

The November 2007 updates to RHEL 4 break the Fedora Directory Server and samba.

To fix this do the following after the update have been applied.

Edit /etc/ldap.conf

  1. Find bind_policy
  2. Uncomment it (remove the leading #)
  3. Change it from hard to soft

Edit /etc/pam.d/samba

  1. The contents of this file should look like the following:
    auth required service=system-auth
    account required service=system-auth
    session required service=system-auth
    password required service=system-auth

The re-boot should not have significant delays. If login and shares still do not work after a re-boot try and second re-boot. It seems that some times it needs two.
