Web Acquire File Limits
Posted by Diane Hancock on 16 January 2019 12:02 PM

Some browsers limit the number of files that can be selected for web acquisition.  This article explains the limits and what to expect from each browser when acquiring files or directories in Adams Web.

TIP: In all browsers, dragging and dropping of files is not limited.

Chrome

File selection fails for a large number of files

File Selection

The maximum number of files selected at one time is limited based on the length of the file names.  Therefore, selecting files with shorter file names will allow more files to be selected than selecting files with longer files names.  The sum of the length of the file names cannot exceed 32,767 (e.g. about 2,176 files with an average file name length of 14 characters including the extension).

The selection dialog allows the user to select more files than are supported, but when the dialog closes, if the limit is exceeded, then no files show in the Acquisition lightbox.

This issue has been reported to Google.

When this happens, use one of these workarounds:

  • select less files
  • use directory selection
  • use file drag and drop
  • use MS Edge

Directory Selection (Adams 5.11 and later)

No known limit (tested: 1 directory with 6000 files) and responsive (directory shows within seconds after closing selection dialog).

File Drag and Drop

No known limit (tested: 6000 files) and responsive (files show within seconds after closing selection dialog).

Directory Drag and Drop (Adams 5.11 and later)

No known limit (tested: directory structure of 76 directories and subdirectories with 10,768 files) and responsive (directory shows within seconds after dropping).

MS Edge

No apparent selection limits

Takes several minutes to show the list of files

File Selection

No known limit.  However, after the selection dialog closes, it can take several seconds or minutes (e.g. 1 minute 17 seconds for 6000 files) before any files appear in the Acquisition lightbox.

Directory Selection (Adams 5.11 and later)

No known limit.  However, after the selection dialog closes, it can take several minutes (e.g. 5 minute 25 seconds for 76 directories and subdirectories with 10,768 files) before the directory appears in the Acquisition lightbox.

File Drag and Drop

No known limit.  However, after dropping the files, it can take several minutes (e.g. 5 minutes 55 seconds for 3000 files) before the files show in the Acquisition lightbox.

Directory Drag and Drop (Adams 5.11 and later)

No known limit.  However, after dropping the directory, it can take several minutes (e.g. 1 minute 5 seconds for 1 directory with 3000 files) before the directory shows in the Acquisition lightbox.

Internet Explorer 11 (IE 11)

File selection fails for a large number of files

File Selection

IE 11 has the same limit as Chrome's file selection and functions the same way.

Namely, the maximum number of files selected at one time is limited based on the length of the file names.

When this happens, use one of these workarounds:

  • select less files
  • use file drag and drop
  • use MS Edge

Directory Selection

The Directory selection button is not available in IE 11.

File Drag and Drop

No known limit (tested: 6000 files) and responsive (i.e. files show within seconds).

Directory Drag and Drop

Directory drag and drop is not supported by IE 11.  When a directory is dropped, the Acquisition lightbox will show but no directories or files are uploaded.
